Leaping Lizards Onslow
This program is funded by Building Health Communities through the Department of Health and Ageing and the Shire of Ashburton. It's aim is simple. to increase physical activity and healthy food choices among participating children and families. When attending primary school classes the Leaping Lizards promote a wide range of healthy topics from adequate hydration and healthy food choices to implementing non competitive yet fun games to encourage maximum participation amongst the children.
The Leaping Lizards run healthy cooking classes and help children to understand how food labeling works. They also teach the children how much sugar is included in some of their favourite products. The Leaping Lizards also have information sessions for parents, highlighting healthy lunchbox choices and how to encourage fussy eaters to include more fruit and vegetables into their diets. Leaping Lizards hold a breakfast club within the school and a Kids Fun Fit Club for 0-6 year olds. The Breakfast club was introduced as it was found that many children were attending school without having eaten breakfast. Since its introduction there have been improved rates of attendance and it has also had a positive impact on behaviour and concentration.
They also have a Vegetable Garden in Onslow. The aim of this is to produce a wide range of vegetables, salad ingredients and herbs which can then be used within the school to continue the healthy food choices promotion.
